The Burke County Long-Term Recovery Group works to support residents recovering from disaster-related impacts by helping identify unmet needs, connect households with available resources, and coordinate with local recovery partners.
The Burke Long-Term Recovery Group (LTRG) was formed in late 2025 to coordinate resources, address unmet needs, and ensure families receive the help they need to fully recover from Hurricane Helene while preparing for future disasters.

Charity Childers
EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, BURKE LONG-TERM RECOVERY GROUP
An alumnus of Western Carolina University with degrees in Political Science and Psychology, Charity has paired her academic foundation with a lifelong commitment to leadership development. She completed the New Leaders Council (New Jersey) training program and has frequently served as a mentor and leader for young adult organizations.
Charity is a seasoned government relations strategist, policy advisor, and community engagement professional with a proven track record of building coalitions and mobilizing stakeholders around shared policy objectives. With experience spanning federal disaster response, state legislature leadership, and trade association advocacy, she excels at connecting public policy with economic and community growth.
Most recently, Charity served with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) in Western North Carolina. She acted as an intergovernmental liaison, connecting elected officials with recovery resources and directing critical case assistance for disaster survivors. Prior to her federal service, she was a Regional Government Affairs Director for multiple North Carolina Association of Realtors branches, leading political outreach and PAC fundraising efforts.
The cornerstone of Charity’s career was forged in the fast-paced New Jersey political landscape. She served for several years as the Chief of Staff for the 2nd Legislative District of the New Jersey General Assembly, managing comprehensive legislative portfolios and public relations before transitioning to the New Jersey Assembly Majority Office as the Deputy Director of Constituent Relations. Alongside her public sector career, Charity brings comprehensive fundraising and compliance experience.
