Burke County United Way's community service includes the distribution of the FamilyWize Prescription Drug Card. The card can be used by everyone in the community, not just people with no health insurance. The cards can be used by people with health insurance, Medicaid or Medicare during deductible periods, for medications not covered by their plan and for people with Medicare Part D during the "doughnut hole."
"40% of adults don't buy the medicine they need, have difficulty affording it or reduce the required dosage because of the high cost", stated Sally Learned, Executive Director for Burke County United Way. "The FamilyWize card has made a significant impact on this issue in Burke County." The United Way has been distributing these cards through their agencies, resource fairs and campaigns. To date Burke County ranks second highest in the state of North Carolina in usage of the FamilyWize card. Twelve thousand seven hundred and eighty claims have been processed totaling $401,793 with a savings of $133,359 to Burke residents.
