Burke County United Way kicked off its 2009-2010 campaign with 18% of its $600,000 goal in place. Two pacesetter campaigns, Leviton Manufacturing and the Town of Valdese ran campaigns in August. Leviton reported almost $10,000 over their $50,000 goal and the Town of Valdese finished out their campaign with $5,870 with over 40% of employees making a donation. The Table Rock Society leadership campaign also began in August. This includes individual donors who give $1,000 and up and to date two G. T. Cornwell Society pledges ($10,000) have been received.
"I am pleased to announce that 46 companies and businesses have committed to run employee campaigns in the next few months" announced Wendy Cato, Resource Development Director for the United Way. The campaign cabinet, led by Nick Saturno of Carolina Properties has been working since January to reestablish relationships with the companies. "We had lost sight of the faces of United Way by concentrating on the dollar amount needed. Once we started looking at the faces of in the agencies and the faces of past donors it became clear why this year's campaign was so important", quoted Saturno.
Burke County United Way funds directly 18 agencies and within those agencies 26 programs. The United Way, as an agency itself, is involved in several new initiatives that include Care Share Health Alliance which addresses meeting the healthcare needs of the low income and uninsured populations and a Strategic Alliance for Burke Youth. "These initiatives look at the root causes of key problems by pulling all sectors of this community together in finding new solutions" commented Sally Learned, Executive Director for the United Way.
