Burke County United Way Seeking Youth Interested in Making Change Happen

What would you do with $500?  Would you like to give out funds to youth-led community projects?  Burke County United Way is seeking up to 20 Burke youth between the ages of 14 and 19 who are interested in participating in a Youth Giving program.

The Youth Giving board will complete a 10 month process of reviewing community needs, writing a request for proposals, reviewing applications and awarding funds to youth-led projects making a change in our community.  The Burke Youth Giving program is seeking youth who can commit to six or seven regular week-day meetings after school from September through May in addition to a few Saturday trainings.

Burke County United Way Executive Director Sally Learned says, “We really want a board that represents the true diversity of this community so we are not just looking for young people with lots of leadership experience already. We are trying to develop a diverse board representing young men and women, the variety of ethnic groups and cultures in our community, as well as geographic representation in Burke County.”

“Our youth under the age of 24, the ‘millennial age group’, are tremendously exciting” says Learned.  “As an age group, millenials are giving the largest number of community service and volunteer hours of any age group in the nation.  Youth today have a keen interest in the community and desire to reach out and make positive change happen.  The Youth Giving program is part of a national effort to develop youth leadership and knowledge of the broader piece of philanthropy”.

This Youth Giving program is a partnership between Burke County United Way and Boy Scouts of America made possible through the support of NC Gives and Leading to Change.  Burke County United Way is committing $3,000 per year for two years to establish the program.

Boy Scouts of America will provide staff for the program and were chosen because of their experience with co-educational career and adventure clubs as well as leadership training initiatives.  Scouting teaches that volunteerism and service to others is one of our responsibilities as good citizens.  “Providing volunteer service is the rent we pay to live in a community” stated Jack Crawford, Scout professional working in Burke County.  Marcus Connelly, a senior at Freedom High School, winner of the 2007 Burke County Citizen of the Year Award for high school youth, and member of the Burke County United Way board will be the United Way representative on the Youth Giving board.

Applications should be submitted to the Burke County United Way office at 301 E. Meeting St., Morganton September 12, 2008.  For an application or if you have questions contact Shane Arrowood at 828-429-5826 or shaneguitarpro@hotmail.com or call Sally Learned at 433-0681.
